Bienvenue au Château de Montjoie, in Les Cevennes, France’s hidden gem.
Les Cevennes is a region in France that is known for being discreet almost secretive with a rebellious facet, large open spaces and deep valleys. During the religion war many came to hide here. The chateau skirts Le Parc National des Cevennes and grand landscapes, endless heather covered hills where the Gevaudan Beast roamed through its forests in the 18th century.
Although not a touristic bustle, summers are lovely here with a strong rural life. Chamborigaud, our village is within a five-minute walk, with an engineering feast in the form of a viaduct
You can appreciate the Sunday market in the village where you can sample all the many types of goat’s cheeses, freshly grown fruits and vegetables and even Saturday night folk bal. If you are more adventurous then go fly fishing, swimming in the many rivers near by, with rock pools and fresh water from the mountains.
In the autumn, the majestuous trees slowly change colours, the sweet chestnuts are falling while everyone and everything come to a still. Enjoy long walks through the many forests and discover long deserted medieval buildings scattered there.
In the winter, snow is only half an hour away, skiing or sledging the choice is yours. By the large fireplace, in one of the many comfortable settees, hug your cup of cocoa and relax.
With an explosion of colours and scents, Spring will come and bring the awaited renewal of nature.
Come and relax…
Though if this not enough to keep you here all day and being lazy by the pool then head south towards Uzes and its market, the Roman magnificent aqueduct Le Pont du Gard, the Roman city of Nimes complete with amphitheatre, temple and even a contemporary library and Art Gallery by Norman Foster. Sportier? Then head North to the water reservoir of Villefort and its sports centre. More nature orientated? Spot some wild wolves at the Parc des Loups du Gevaudan or hire a donkey and follow Robert Louis Stevenson’s steps!
All and much more are easily accessible and will make lovely days out.
Like les Cevennes, Château de Montjoie can accommodate most your desires and wishes, wether you are planning a family holiday, bringing a group for a retreat, organising a pampering week (try a massage under the cedar trees, umhhhh) or deciding to tie the knot on the lawn by the starry sky, get in touch and the magic will start.
